Have you seen the youtube double rainbow video?  Apparently last year I was living under a rock and missed watching it until my friend showed me this Hello Kitty double cupcake rainbow T-shirt.  The shirt makes fun of the video by asking “what does it mean” since no one really knows that the actual point of the video is.  The shirt can be purchsed from ThinkGeek and is $24.99.

I have made donut muffins in the past and now that I found this chocolate dipped donut cupcake recipe I think I will have to try donut cupcakes.  They fit perfectly into the breakfast cupcake kick I have been on.  It started with stuffed pancake cupcakes which was followed by cinnamon roll cupcakes.  Now these donut cupcakes which I saw on The Family Kitchen but originally came from The Fannie Farmer Baking Book, have been added to the list!

I know what some of you out there are thinking, “geeze, another cupcake card.”  But I saw Boris the English Bulldog and couldn’t resist!  Boris is the name of the dog featured on a line of products created by Cuore and shown in the picture above.  Cuore has a variety of items for sale on her Etsy page including several birthday themed notecards with original illustrations of dogs holding cupcakes in their mouths.  In addition to the english bulldog option there is a french bulldog option and a chihuahua which has a really cute heart shaped spot!

This week’s nerdcake isn’t so much about the design of the cupcakes, in fact these cupcakes are decorated in a very basic manner, it is more about what is done with the cupcakes.  They play Tetris with the cupcakes!  This fun, 39 second video was posted on Instructables and features color coded cupcakes in the form of tetris blocks.  I love that when the cupcakes or blocks form a line they are eaten up!

These Southport Cupcake Truffles by Truffle Truffle look delicious and I am dying to try them! The description reads that these truffles are white cupcakes, rolled in vanilla butter cream, covered in white, milk, or dark chocolate and finished with sprinkles. The four piece box costs $6.00 and the 12 piece tin costs $20.00, the cupcake truffles along with more unique truffle flavors, caramels, and s’mores are available on Truffle Truffle’s website.

After a cold, rainy week here in South Carolina it’s supposed to warm up  this weekend. If it’s supposed to be warmer where you live, why not spend a little time outdoors and make this cupcake planter to grow your flowers in?  This DIY project comes from Whimsy Love.  Gather your supplies listed below and head over to Whimsy Love for the rest of the directions!

Supplies: shorter stubby terracotta pots (I found some at Home Depot & some really cool short stubby ones at Fred Meyer), spray paint, acrylic paint, clear spray sealer, rocks (for drainage), potting soil, plants, drill (with 1/4″ drill bit), 1/4″ dowel (Hardware store or Walmart), saw blade, round wooden balls (hardware store).

Also needed, but not pictured: wood glue, paint brush.

Have you been to Starbucks lately and noticed that they have jumped on the latest food trend bandwagon.  Calling the line “Starbucks Petits” they now offer cake pops, whoopie pies, and mini cupcakes.  I know Starbucks have had cupcakes for some time now but I hadn’t had the opportunity to try them but this past week.  I saw the little peanut butter cupcakes and had to try one; I was pleasantly surprised by how good the cupcake was.  The chocolate cupcake was moist, the peanut butter frosting flavor complimented the chocolate cake perfectly and wasn’t too sweet.  And I liked the half of a mini peanut butter cupcake on top of the cupcake. The mini cupcakes also come in carrot cake.

I’m not sure how I feel about Starbuck’s following the common trends.  I think that mini food items are cute so the whoopie pies look really cute but is it too much? Are cake pops and cupcakes any less special because they are available at Starbucks, a worldwide franchise that is easily accessible.  Or are these new menu items a benefit that make getting some of our nations favorite food trends easier at one of our most well liked coffee shops? I’m still torn.

I saw these on TasteSpotting and was immediately attracted to the bright colors, which are perfect for spring!  Love From The Oven created these peep cupcake push pops after seeing CupKate’s Event Design’s version.  CupKate’s Etsy page is also where you can purchase the disposable push pop containers for $0.95 each.  With Easter just around the corner and peeps coming in every color I think these cupcakes would be great for school parties!

A quick run to my local Target tonight resulted in an exciting cupcake find.  Katie Daisy who is the artist behind the Etsy shop, The Wheatfield has teamed up with target to create a line of spring themed products.  Theres gift bags, roll wrap, tissue paper, paper plates, napkins, invitations, frames, table runners and place mats.  The most important product are the Katie Daisy cupcake liners.  I found them in the seasonal section which is currently filled with Easter items.  The regular cupcake liners come in a 75 count pack and the mini baking cup 100 count pack, both cost $1.99 each.

Ash from Butterfly Food made these flag cupcake toppers for Valentine’s Day.  I like how simple and versatile these toppers are.  All you need are bamboo skewers, cardstock, glue and of course, cupcakes.  Choosing different colored cardstock allows you to customize these toppers for any occasion.  I also really like that she made the skewers different sizes making it more visually appealing.

Remember those stuffed pancake cupcakes we posted in January? Well La Fuji Mama turned another breakfast classic into a cupcake, transforming cinnamon rolls into cinnamon roll cupcakes! I am so excited that one of my favorite artists, Stephanie Fizer Coleman has finally created an image with cupcakes!  She has a great blog where she will post new images and projects, occasional free downloads, tutorials, and lately doodles.  This owl juggling cupcakes image started out as the doodle to the right and was transformed into a greeting card and a print.  The 5×7 inch print is available for purchase from her Etsy shop for $10.00.

I really like this Anatomy of a Cupcake image by Sarah and Allen.  The duo created it for their friend’s birthday and are now selling the 23”x15” print for $50.00.  I came across the image via Black*Eiffel but be sure to look at Things, Allen Hemberger’s website.  That’s where the print was originally posted and there’s a fun 40 second video of them preparing for the photo shoot!

I have yet to try vegan cupcakes but if they taste as good as these cupcake by Joylicious look, I’m sure I will love them!  These cupcakes, called best vegan chocolate cupcakes with vegan banana ice cream combine three things I love, chocolate, peanut butter and bananas.  The best part is that they not only look delicious but actually sound healthy.  I’ve always thought vegan recipes would be hard to make but after reading the ingredients and directions these actually sound doable.  Below you will find the recipe for the cupcakes but for the banana ice cream you will have to read Joylicious’s original post!  While there be sure to look around, I noticed a (non-vegan) mini pumpkin spice cupcake recipe that also looks amazing.

This little fox card is too cute! I love that the fox that is looking at a cupcake looks like he belongs in a circus! This card, which costs £3.10, is made using shades of pink that are vegetable ink.

Do you subscribe to Hello Cupcake, What’s Newsletter? If you don’t, you might want to consider it.  The authors of two great cupcake books, Hello Cupcake! and What’s New, Cupcake? have an online newsletter where they send emails once a month; Which is nice because you are not overwhelmed with emails.  Each month’s email contains a recipe and decorating instructions for cupcakes that fit that month’s major holiday or major event (January was Superbowl cupcakes).  This month’s Blarney Stone Cupcakes recipe ties into St. Patrick’s Day.  I love that everything on the cupcakes are edible, including the Blarney stones which are breakfast treats and shamrocks which are rolled spearmint.  Below you will find the recipe for the cupcakes but for more tips on how to roll the shamrocks, you’ll have to look at the technique of the month page.

DIY cupcake toppers seem to be everywhere!  Here’s a cute free printable Saint Patrick’s Day cupcake toppers that TomKat Studio blogged last year; of course it could be used this year! To download the toppers, which include three other images, head over to TomKat Studio’s blog.  Be sure to look around their site while you’re there, they have lots of other cupcake related freebies!

Mod Cloth seems to always have great cupcake items! These sweeter than a cupcake manicure set would make a great gift or party favor as the product description suggests.  The set which includes set of tweezers, nail file, cuticle tool and trimmer, and nail clipper, is only $7.99 and comes in blue, green, or pink.

Just when you think that every item that could be made in cupcake flavor is on the market they come out with cupcake toothpaste!  The toothpaste is by Accoutrements, who have created lots of other crazy cupcake items.  Some of the other items that Accoutrements offers which we have shared with you in the past include bandages, mints in a cupcake shaped tin, a jumbo cupcake magnet, and a cupcake scented air freshener.  You can order a 2.5oz tube of frosting flavored toothpaste for $4.99 from Perpetual Kid.

Last summer I followed Once Wed’s directions to create flower fabric garland.  Had I been in cupcake fan mode I would have thought to turn the fabric flowers into cupcake toppers! This is exactly what Paiges of Style decided to do, using the same Once Wed idea she created fabric flower cupcake toppers.  These toppers are great because you can customize them to match any color scheme or use up scraps of fabric you have lying around.  On her website Paige has great instructions with pictures to help you along the way.

When I think of Wisconsin I think of cheese, not cupcakes but John Holcomb, the artist behind the United Plates print series seems to think differently.  For each state Holcomb has created a print that represents that states’ shape.  The state lines of Wisconsin, according to Holcomb seem to make up the same shape as an Oreo cupcake.  While Wisconsin might be the only cupcake, there is a plate for each state and they are available for purchase with varying sizes ranging in prices from $30-100.

Trees and cupcakes are really popular right now and see to be popping up on everything.  What better idea than to combine the two and create a cupcake tree card! This birthday greeting card by Pinkerton Designs for Tiny Little Prints costs $1.99-3.99.  Any cupcake lover would be happy to be given this card which has what looks like cupcake ornaments coming off the tree!

I love, love, love this idea! Cupcake Fondue!
