Sometimes it isn’t the perfect looking cupcake that wins the heart.  Although they are professionally created, these cupcakes hearken back to a simpler time in our lives when baby blue frosting, simple lettering, and sprinkles bring joy.   We’ve seen many fantastic wedding cupcakes, now this is a fantastic wedding proposal cupcake.

Cupcake Secret Tips

cupcakes-CU02-wide-horizontal

None of these cupcake tips in Newsweek magazine from Pam Nelson, owner of Butter Lane Bakery, were that ground-breaking, but these tips have a smack yourself in the forehead simplicity.  You can imagine if all the suggestions were followed, how much better tasting your cupcakes can be.  The tips are:

– Use the best butter you can find
– When possible use real ingredients not extracts or artificial substitutes
– Use real chocolate over cocoa powder
– Frosting does not have to be teeth-shattering sweet
– Wrap your cupcakes after baking to preserve moistness

Posted by on Tuesday, September 29th, 2009

Just yesterday, California was suffering through another 90-100 degree Indian summer day.  The last throes of summer refusing to leave.  In a dramatic 24 hour reversal, it is now a brisk 60 degrees; the wind that has been absent for so long is back.  Fall is here, and winter is just around the corner.

With fall comes the sniffles and the cold, and Ditsy Daisies delivers again with two new cupcake items.  The first are reusable cupcake hand warmers.  They  come in a pack of 2 and easily fit into handbags or pockets.

    Cupcake Bubble Goes Global

Posted by on Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

Some people say that the cupcake bubble has reached a pinnacle.  This is most likely true for certain areas of the country. Most prominent are the Los Angeles, New York, and Washington DC areas; each boasting many quality cupcakes stores to enjoy and compare against.  Have certain US metropolitan areas reached saturation point for the number of cupcake stores it can support?  Yes, definitely.

Are there other areas other than the major US metropolitan areas that cupcakes have not spread to?  Yes.

Here are some other cupcakes stores that have found a home in areas you would have never have thought possible:

    23 cupcake sugar daddy

After falling in love with the cupcakes and baked goods, Fadi Jaber started “Sugar Daddy’s” in his home in Amman, Jordan.  Business has been doing so well he opened new stores in Beirut and Dubai.  Aside from the original American flavors, Jaber tries to appeal to regional tastes, creating a date cupcake with cream cheese frosting, as well as pistachio with orange blossom frosting.

23 cupcake by tom mexico city

Mexico City’s cupcake king, Tom Grant, started “Cupcakes by Tom” in the middle of a country who has not been introduced to cupcakes.  About 60 customers descend on the bakery each day to scoop up a few hundred cupcakes and a hundred muffins baked every morning.  Tom is a true cupcake ambassador.

    Savory Lamb Cupcake

Posted by on Friday, September 18th, 2009

When is a savory cupcake too savory and becomes something else entirely?  It looks like a cupcake, and designed like a cupcake, but this Lamb Merguez Savory Cupcake on golden raisin couscous topped with white bean puree is definitely a cupcake inspired dinner.  Even the tomato on top looks like a maraschino cherry.

You decide.  Cupcake or imposter.  Full recipe here.

    World’s Smallest Cupcake?

Posted by on Tuesday, September 15th, 2009

As Britian celebrates its National Cupcake Week (Sept 14-Sept 19), various cupcake bakeries are vying for attention in the news.  Today, Sayers and Hampson’s, a UK chain of stores and Cafés, launched their version of the world’s smallest cupcake.  Measuring 1.5 cm wide and 3 cm high, it is truly a tiny morsel.  Sayers said the Guinness Book of Records entry for the World’s Smallest Cupcake has never been recorded, so it is hoping its mini baked good will be a worthy contender.

    Football Cupcakes – Helmet Sleeves

Posted by on Thursday, September 10th, 2009

Traditionally, the overlap between football and cupcakes were minor.  Even the meaning of cupcake in football lingo is not the sweet and moist dessert we all crave.  Instead, it can be defined as:

to compete or win with little effort

An example would be this article title: Not all Big 12 teams have cupcakes on opening menu.  Many schools football teams usually schedule cupcakes at the beginning of the season to get the winning momentum rolling.

Football-themed cupcake accessories usually have usually been quite scarce, so ATC was happy to see football helmet sleeves that come in 14 colors to match your favorite school.  Seems perfect for school pride parades, game watching party, or birthday parties.

    Cupcake Videos on YouTube

If memory serves me correctly, the first cupcake videos to go viral was “The Cuppycake Song” by Judianna Castle featuring I believe to be the son and daughter of Judianna.

Cupcakes are not just a food, but also a cultural phenomenon that has spanned a gamut of themes from traditional to upscale as well as quaint to cool. A reader Madeline pointed out a couple of cupcake rap videos that expand the cupcake universe even further.

    10. Less really is more. Exhibit A: the grilled cheese sandwich. If I cooked my last meal over a skillet, ironing two pieces of Cheddar-stuffed bread together with some strong mustard, I would be smiling wide
