Magnolia Bakery vs Georgetown Cupcake

Posted by on June 9th, 2011

Magnolia Bakery (c Sam Dow)

Let the cupcake wars begin!

Magnolia Bakery – of Sarah Jessica Parker fame – is about to face some serious competition from Georgetown Cupcake – of DC Cupcake fame.  The official announcement, made June 7, forecasts the opening of the NYC store in winter 2011.

Can anyone weigh in on who will win this war?

Will it be Magnolia with their “delicately textured lemon cupcake filled with a tart lemon cream and topped with lemon meringue buttercream,” now on its second owner, having already been sold once since its 1996 opening in Greenich Village?  Or will it be sisters Katherine Kallinis and Sophie LaMontagne with their “Valrhona chocolate cupcake with a whipped Callebaut chocolate frosting topped with a fondant flower” at the shop in SoHo?

If the yumminess of website photographs is factor to handicap this competition, my money is on Katherine & Sophie.

Cupcakes Help Sick Kids

Posted by on June 4th, 2011

It seems that we are always hearing about ways we can give of our time and resources to help others, and it shouldn’t come as a surprise to cupcake enthusiasts that cupcakes can also play a role.

This past Tuesday, singer Sheryl Crow used cupcakes to bring some cheer to sick kids at St. Jude Children’s Hospital in Memphis, TN.  The popular singer visited the hospital as a part of the Music Gives to St. Jude Kids initiative, which aims to fight childhood cancer and disease through raising funds and awareness.  Crow participated by making cupcakes with children at the hospital.

People Magazine Food Trend: Savory Cupcakes

Posted by on May 31st, 2011

The June 6, 2011 issue of People magazine features Kim Kardashian on the cover but it’s what’s inside that matters to cupcake fans.  The issue’s Food Trend section is all about Savory Cupcakes and celebrities that enjoy them.  According to the article Rachel Bilson is a fan of Tomato Soup Cupcakes from Yummy Cupcakes.  Rachel Ray also happens to be a fan of Yummy Cupcakes. Chicago’s More Cupcake’s Bacon Maple Cupcake has made Oprah’s O List.  Tom Pizzica of the Food Network likes Lox Cupcakes from It’s a Cupcake in Philadelphia.  Yes, you read that correctly, lox cupcake as in smoked salmon cupcake.  Candace Nelson, judge on Food Network’s Cupcake Wars has been spotted eating Sprinkle’s Cupcake’s salted caramel cupcake.  I would definitely try the salted caramel and am intrigued by the tomato soup cupcake which I’ve never heard of before but lox might be too extreme for me.  The magazine also shares a Smoked Mac-N-Cheese Lasagna Cupcake recipe from L.A.’s Heirloom L.A. catering company.

Have you tried any savory cupcakes from your favorite cupcake shop? Or have you attempted baking your own savory cupcakes?  Why not whip up a batch yourself with these savory cupcake recipes that we’ve shared with you in the past; like the Cheddar Chive and Bacon Cupfakes with avocado frosting or Beer, Cheese, Bacon and Cream Cheese Cupcakes.

This week’s giveaway comes from a virtual celebrity in the cupcake world!   Dollhouse Bake Shoppe’s founder, Lindsay Morton, was the very first winner on Food Network’s hit show, Cupcake Wars.  She has taken her sweets from local to national in the blink of an eye and is now selling more than just cupcake products on her adorable site.    I received the Cupcake Confetti Kit and adored how everything I needed was right there!  One of my favorite things was the adorable box the items came in!

Each Kit Includes:

-Detailed instructions                                                   -All natural, gourmet vanilla cupcake/cake mix

-All natural, gourmet chocolate frosting mix      -Decorating bag to pipe a professional swirl of icing

I made these cupcakes with my kids and they were very moist and delicious.  The directions were easy too follow and you only needed to add a few of your own ingredients.  The cuppies did not stay around my house for very long!

These cupcakes are a mouthful to say and I’m sure the same to eat.  I know that we have all indulged ourselves in watching The Food Networks Cupcake Wars a few times, or maybe all the time.  So we all have an idea of the kind of crazy cupcakes that the contestants come up with. I saw this one and thought, “Sounds like a trip to the movies squashed all into one sinful cupcake!”

This recipe is from the episode LA Auto Show from the bakers of Bake You Happy.
