Cupcakes and Children’s Books

A Dr. Seuss Display

As a mother to a nearly six-month-old son who loves looking at (and trying to eat) any book he can get his hands on, the Iron Cupcake Madison Challenge definitely got my attention!  Bakers and cupcake enthusiasts gathered this past Sunday at Basie’s Restaurant in Madison, Wisconsin to eat and vote on mini-cupcakes, which were all based off of popular children’s books.  The proceeds from this event will benefit the Literacy Network.

What were some of the winners, you’re probably wondering?  Best taste went to Cassondra Bookstaff’s apple cupcakes, inspired by “The Giving Tree”.  Best display went to Valerie Klorman Sorenson’s Caterpillar Picnic cupcakes from “The Very Hungry Caterpillar” and Andrea Thorson and Naomi Richardson’s  Painting the Roses Red Velvet cupcakes from “Alice in Wonderland”.  All sorts of children’s books and authors were represented at the contest: Dr. Seuss, Olivia, Curious George, Harry Potter, and Charlotte’s Web are among some of the most well-known.  To see more pictures from the event, see Iron Cupcake Madison’s facebook page.
