Cupcakes Set a World Record

This past week a huge crowd of cancer survivors and supporters came together for Barrington’s Relay for Life in Barrington, Illinois to honor those who have lost their lives battling cancer and to raise funds for cancer research.  Cupcakes took center stage at this event.  A tower of 16, 478 cupcakes stood at the center of the Barrington High School Community Stadium, setting a world record for the most cupcakes on a display tower.

Can you fathom the logistics behind baking all of these cupcakes and assembling the tower?  It sounds like quite a feat to me.  Carrie Curie, from SweetPea Cakes, chaired the successful attempt at this world record, and Carol Angelescu Levy took responsibility for coordinating the many bakeries, restaurants and individuals who would be responsible for making and donating the cupcakes.  Imperial Woodworking Company of Palatine, Illinois carefully designed blueprints for the 18-tier display tower (talk about responsibility…it would be pretty lousy for all of those cupcakes to fall!).

The event was a huge success.  Approximately 18,000 cupcakes were donated to the event, and even though only 16, 478 cupcakes formed the tower, the extra cupcakes were sold at the concession stand.  $364,000 was raised and donations are continuing to come.  This is just another example of how cupcakes spread cheer and help raise funds and awareness for worthy causes!
