I find gel-type frosting coloring (like this: http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=3E30B2D9-475A-BAC0-5D5C3DB846DFD354&fid=3E33265A-475A-BAC0-597A6ED538D55E2B) to be quite easy to work with. It’s pretty strong, color-wise, and doesn’t upset the moisture balance of the buttercream too much. The most fussy thing about it is making sure to use a clean toothpick each time you dip into the gel so that you don’t contaminate the container.

What problem are you having? My favorite is also the Wilton gel. It gives great color and never makes my buttercream falter. But i echo the advice of the clean toothpick! EVERY TIME!!
