Nashville’s cupcake craze
by Joan Brasher, The Tennessean
It was the TV show that launched a thousand cupcakes. Carrie Bradshaw, Sarah Jessica Parker’s oh-so-stylish alter ego on the HBO series Sex and the City, strolled the West Village, looking fabulous while nibbling a cupcake from the now-famous Magnolia Bakery. In an instant, a trend was born. Cafes dedicated to the couture confections started popping up in the neighboring boroughs, and eventually nationwide, from Beverly Hills to Albuquerque to New Orleans.
It was only a matter of time before Nashville got into the act. Several bakeries around Music City have upped their cupcake quotient.
We say, let the cupcake title fight begin. At about $3 apiece, they’re in everybody’s price range. And the best part of all? You can eat them with your hands.

Cupcake Party Hat by Silver Spoon Scraps

…or at least, Chicago. Yes, yes it’s the famous red, white and blue flag every windy city hipster has tattooed on them somewhere and two weeks ago I piped it onto a dozen cupcakes, complete with gummy ras for the Chicago Style Crafter Trunk Show. This week, The Bleeding Heart Bakery unveiled their much more carefully done version- the Girls Rock! Chicago cupcake.
One dollar from the sale of each charity cupcake in the month of June will be donated to Girls Rock! Chicago.
Girls Rock! Chicago (GR!C) is a volunteer-run non-profit that works to foster girls’ creative expression, positive self-esteem and community awareness through rock music.
Girls Rock! Chicago is a 501(c)(3) non-for profit organization dedicated to fostering girls’ creative expression, positive self-esteem and community awareness through rock music. Through our music education programs for girls ages 9-16, we are committed to educating girls about the musical, technical, and creative aspects involved in musicianship, because we believe that young girls are rarely encouraged to explore self-expressive creative outlets and are less likely to be given access to musical and technical instruction or equipment. We believe that rock music can be a crucial tool in allowing young women to respond to preconceived notions of what they can do and what they can become.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have had a couple of rough losses in the first two games heading toward the Stanley Cup.But with this evening’s home-ice advantage, life could be a little sweeter. They will be skating hard at Mellon Arena to shut down the Detroit Red Wings in the final round.
For fans pulling game parties together, it’s no problem putting dessert on the table. Bakeries are making decorated cakes and cookies, theme cupcakes and giant chocolate chip cookies plastered with the team’s logo.
